I’m not sure if this is really news to anybody, nor does it strike me as being particularly newsworthy… a new study published in the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology (whew!) found that bacteria, mammal stomach lining, and pesticides are freely injected into cheese by manufacturers. So every bite of cheese we take could have numerous potential hazards to our health.
In one instance, researchers found eight (eight!) totally undiscovered microbes on a hunk of Reblochon cheese. No one knows if there are any health benefits to ingesting these microbes.
I don’t find it at all surprising that there are all kinds of “goodies” lurking in cheese. It’s a weird, strange substance, and sometimes the smell is enough to make me run. But, for all of it’s strangeness, cheese is pretty damn good, and I’m certainly not going to stop eating it (or the little microbes who are paying their mortgages on that hunk of creamy goodness)!
